Huge Cash App Data Breach Affects over 8.2 Million Customers

The company behind the popular mobile payment service Cash App has announced that it’s suffered a large-scale data breach, with approximately 8.2 million of its current and former customers affected.

Explanation of the Cash App Data Breach

Cash App’s creator Block, a provider of banking services and digital payments, filed a report with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, April 4.

The breach was brought about, according to the report, by a former employee who, on December 10, 2021, downloaded specific reports that contained client information about users of the Cash App service who use the company’s Cash App Investing service.

The downloaded reports did contain customers’ full names and brokerage account numbers, which are distinctive ID numbers connected to Cash App Investing customers’ stock activity. The company claimed that no “usernames or passwords, Social Security numbers, date of birth, payment card information, addresses, bank account information, or any other personally identifiable information” was compromised.

Steps to Resolve the Cash App Breach

Block alerted authorities to the breach and, with the aid of a reputable forensics company that shall remain nameless, started an ongoing probe into the incident. The business is also in the process of notifying the relevant regulatory agencies and contacting all 8.2 million affected clients to let them know about the breach.

According to Block, it “takes the security of the information belonging to its customers very seriously and continues to review and strengthen administrative and technical safeguards to protect its customers’ information.”
